Learn to cook like your great, great grandmother at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture on April 9 when the center will offer a hearth cooking workshop. Workshop participants will work together to prepare a meal typical of the 1830s over the open hearths in the center’s Phoenix Mill House. The workshop will explore historic recipes and cooking techniques through hands-on preparation under the guidance of our experienced hearth cooks. Once the hard work is done, participants will enjoy the fruits of their labors and eat the meal they have prepared. The workshop will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Registration is required.
The menu includes hand churned butter; gourd soup with fried bread; pork, sage, and apple pie; and gingerbread cookies. Participants will receive a recipe for bread dough to prepare the day before the workshop for baking in the mill house’s beehive oven.
Hearth cooking is a strenuous activity involving bending, kneeling, and lifting. Participants should wear comfortable clothing and bring an apron. All participants must be at least 18 years old. This workshop is limited to six participants.
The Phoenix Mill House is a 19th century worker’s home that was part of a large textile mill complex that stood at the corner of Main and Grove Streets in Peterborough. The house has been furnished to interpret the 1830s, the time when the Industrial Revolution was transforming rural life in the Monadnock Region and across New Hampshire.
