On Saturday, October 17, flutist Minta White will perform with the Alturas Duo,who perform on a variety of stringed instruments, at the Monadnock Center for History and Culture. as part of the Music in Bass Hall Concert series. Minta White is an award-winning flutist, chamber musician, and improvisor. Her amazing range of flute usage crosses many genres, including classical music, jazz, free music, Chinese traditional folk music, Latin American music and more. She graduated magna cum laude from the Hartt School of Music, where she studied with John Wion, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in Flute Performance. She has also studied with Dr. John Barcellona, flutist/composer Gary Schocker, and jazz flutist Ali Ryerson. She has won several awards both for flute and piano performances, most recently winning the Honors Competition at Longy School of Music in 2012.
The Alturas Duo are frequent collaborators with Minta White. They perform on guitar, viola, and charagno, with a repertoire that South American and Chamber music. They are noted not only for their musical virtuosity, but also for their colorful explanations of the unusual music which they are presenting, and lively humor.
Since its creation, the Duo has worked closely with many composers and has premiered dozens of commissions, arrangements and transcriptions including works by Horacio Salinas, José Lezcano, Raimundo Penaforte, Alexander Silas Walker, Ben Starr, David McBride, and Ronald Pearl. Most recently the Duo has premiered “Concierto de los Andes” with the Fairfax, Virginia Symphony Orchestra and “El vuelo de tu alma” with the New Orchestra of Washington, both by the esteemed Chilean composer, Javier Farías. Whether playing as a duo or in collaboration with other musicians and vocalists, the Alturas Duo moves at ease from classical to folk to contemporary compositions.
This concert marks the first Monadnock region appearance for these performers, and their music is sure to resonate impressively in the acoustically wonderful Bass Hall.
