Self-Improvement Ideas for Your Staycation

Self-Improvement Ideas for Your Staycation

Vacation time! If you’re feeling the need to get out, but circumstances (lockdown, weather, finances, or the like) won’t let you go too far, it may be time for a staycation. But just because you’re staying close to home doesn’t mean you can’t go on a voyage of self-discovery. Here are a few self-improvement ideas for your staycation to make the most of your time at home.

Set up an Educational Challenge

You might not be able to see the world, but you can bring it to you through your local library. Take the time to pick up a few of your favorite titles and authors, but you can also ask the librarian to recommend something more challenging. The library is also an excellent resource for streaming services like Hoopla and Kanopy. You can watch feature films, of course, but take some time to learn something new through a documentary or travelogue. Ask the librarian about online educational courses covering history, science, geography, mathematics, and more. Local  libraries  and historical societies are a great resource for staycation learning!

Explore the World Through Takeout

You’ve probably ordered from your favorite restaurants so often this past year that you’ve grown a little bored with them. It’s time for a change. Entertain your palate and search online for a new restaurant that’s a little bit out of the ordinary for you. You never truly experience a culture without tasting its food. Get a preview of a future trip by ordering another country or region’s cuisine. Check out Discover Monadnock’s restaurant listings or search by town if you prefer!

Pamper Yourself, Inside and Out

Turn your bathroom into a spa. There are so many ways to pamper yourself and use skin treatments at home, for example. Pick up a few affordable new cosmetics, bath soaps, creams, oils, tools, and more to turn your bathtub, shower, and countertop into a rejuvenating relaxation center. A hot bath, a few candles, and a good book can completely transport you. Consider a massage or a visit to a spa during your time off for for the ultimate in pampering. You won’t have to travel far!

Be a Tourist in Your Hometown

You may think you’ve seen everything your town or region has to offer, but the odds are you haven’t. One of the best self-improvement ideas for your staycation is to get to know your home turf better. Even in the heart of a major city, there’s greenery and walking paths to explore. There’s likely a place of natural wonder a few short miles away from your home, ready for you to explore it. If you’re more interested in educating yourself, check out any small museums and historical landmarks within walking or driving distance. Do you really know the place where you live? Now is the opportunity to find out. Check out the local historical societies or the museums and galleries.

Meditate

Take some time to sit down, relax, and reflect on life, the universe, and everything else. Go on a voyage to inner space by finding a quiet place in your home, sitting down, and taking several deep breaths. Try not to focus on what’s bothering you. Instead, let the worries of the day float away. You might find local assistance with meditation or yoga helpful for this journey.  When you “return” from your meditation, things may look a lot clearer!
